En este artículo la autora contrasta la obra del general Lázaro Cárdenas con la situación actual del país, que —a su juicio— parece extraviado. Subraya varios momentos que definieron la política que realizó como general, presidente y ciudadano, para propiciar que la gente común tuviese bienestar y voz pública, mientras cuidaba que la nación no sufriera pérdidas en años de guerras, intolerancias y abuso imperial. Destaca su legado en la educación socialista, la expropiación petrolera, la creación del INAH y los parques nacionales, su agudeza y pertinencia en las relaciones internacionales, entre ellas, el recibimiento de exiliados españoles.

Abstract

In this article the author contrasts the work of General Lázaro Cárdenas with the current situation in the country, which she regards as misplaced. She highlights moments that defined the policies that he carried out as a general, president and citizen, to ensure the wellbeing and public voice of ordinary people, while he tried to keep the nation’s losses in check during years of war, intolerance, and imperial abuse. Moreover, she underscores his legacy in Socialist education, oil expropriation, the creation of the INAH and national parks, his vision and significance in international affairs, including the decision to receive Spanish exiles.

Este texto describe la narrativa de Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas como un intento por mantener distancia y objetividad hacia la vida y obra de su padre con el inevitable testimonio personal. En su opinión se rescata el sentido de la obra del general Lázaro Cárdenas por ofrecer justicia social y soberanía plena a la nación. El libro se divide en tres partes: en la primera da cuenta de su ingreso a la Revolución mexicana y el ascenso a la Presidencia; en la segunda analiza la obra del presidente Cárdenas, sus logros y pendientes; por último, en la tercera narra sus años fuera del poder.

Abstract

This text describes the narrative of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas as an effort to maintain a certain distance to afford objectivity on his father’s life and work inevitable in a personal testimony. In his opinion the book recovers the significance of the work of General Lázaro Cárdenas in providing social justice and full sovereignty to the nation. The book is divided into three sections: the first on his participation in the Revolution and his rise to the Presidency; the second on President Cárdenas’s work, achievements and unresolved issues; and the third on his years after he left office.
