Resumen
En Chile, el 18 de octubre de 2019 se abrió la coyuntura política más importante desde el fin de la dictadura. Cansadas de las desigualdades del modelo neoliberal y la privatización exacerbada de los derechos sociales, miles de personas ocuparon las calles del país luego de que el gobierno de Sebastián Piñera intentara subir la tarifa del transporte público. Las manifestaciones rápidamente se extendieron por todo Chile y por los territorios del pueblo mapuche. El gobierno respondió con una agresiva represión y, de manera inédita, militarizó el país. Esta estrategia represiva dejó una treintena de muertos y miles de heridos y presos políticos. No obstante, tales medidas fueron insuficientes para frenar las protestas, cuestión que obligó a la clase política a iniciar un proceso democrático que tiene por aspiración popular el cambio de la constitución heredada de la dictadura.

Abstract
On October 18, 2019, the most important political scenario since the end of Pinochet’s dictatorship opened up in Chile. Thousands of people —tired of the inequalities of the neoliberal model and the growing privatization of social rights— took hold of the streets in the capital, when Sebastian Piñera’s government attempted to raise the fare of public transport. The demonstrations quickly spread throughout Chile and into the territories of the Mapuche people. The government responded with aggressive repression and unprecedentedly militarized the country. This repressive strategy left near to thirty people dead and thousands wounded and in political prison. However, such measures were insufficient to cease the protests, and the issue forced the political establishment to initiate a democratic process whose popular aspiration is to change the constitution inherited from the dictatorship.
