Resumen

En este artículo se examinan las relaciones espaciales y políticas de la Iglesia Católica, la colonia británica y las comunidades mayas asentadas en el sur de Honduras Británica. La investigación se basa en registros de archivo desde finales del siglo XIX hasta principios del siglo XX. Los desacuerdos entre la Iglesia Católica y la Colonia Británica fueron mitigados por un acuerdo: los mayas debían instalarse en comunidades permanentes.

Abstract

This paper will examine the spatial and political relations of the Catholic Church, the British colony and the Mayan communities settled at the south of British Honduras. The research is based on archival records from the end of the XIX century, to the beginning of the XX Century. The disagreements between the Catholic Church and the British Colony were mitigated by an agreement: the Mayans had to settle in permanent communities.

Resumen

La Guerra de Castas no sólo convulsionó a la sociedad de la península de Yucatán, sino que también dividió a los mayas alzados. Este artículo aborda, justamente, la situación que vivieron los mayas pacíficos, aquellos que firmaron la paz con el gobierno de Yucatán a principios de la década de 1850, y que ante las agresiones de parte de los llamados cruz’ob, tuvieron que emigrar hacia el sur de la península, sobre todo a Belice, a un hábitat diferente al que habían conocido siempre, tuvieron que desarrollar nuevas habilidades de supervivencia y enfrentarse a la selva y al jaguar. El autor recoge, en una narrativa etnográfica, los testimonios de dos mujeres sobrevivientes de aquel éxodo.

Abstract

Aside from creating a shock in the life at the Yucatan Peninsula, The Caste War also created divisions between the Mayans who formed part of the revolt. This paper will examine the impact of the insurrection on the pacifist Mayans, which signed a peace treaty with the government at the beginning of the 1850s. This group had to emigrate to the South (mostly to Belize) due to the aggressions of the group cruz’ob. They found themselves in a different environment from the one they had known in Yucatan, and they had to develop new survival skills for the jungle and to protect themselves against jaguars. The author develops an ethnographic narrative based on the accounts of two women who survived the exodus.
